The top 5 most popular combat sports among women

by Myriam Benadda on Aug 21, 2023
Femme et homme grappling

Nowadays, more and more women are getting involved in combat sports, seeking to develop their physical strength and self-confidence. In this article, we present to you the top 5 of the most popular combat sports among women. Prepare yourself to discover disciplines that will allow you to flourish both physically and mentally!

French boxing

French boxing (or savate) allows you to fight with your fists and feet, but not your shins, unlike kick boxing or Thai boxing. Elbows and knees are also allowed in Thai boxing, which sometimes causes significant injuries; they are prohibited in boxing. It is a sport that requires agility, flexibility and speed, so it corresponds well to women's innate physical abilities!

Taekwendo

Today, almost 20,000 women are registered with the Taekwendo federation. Taekwondo, originating from South Korea, is a combat sport and martial art. Meaning “way of foot and fist”, it is practiced in full-contact and recognized as an Olympic discipline. With multiple percussion and self-defense techniques, it allows practitioners to effectively defend themselves against any aggression. However, traditional taekwondo is a rather aggressive martial art, with potentially heavy strikes. The training is long and rigorous, but it allows you to gain self-confidence and improve your physical condition, surpassing the results obtained in the gym. Women also develop flexibility and speed of reflexes.

Karate

Karate is often seen as a violent and masculine sport, but in reality it is a martial art based on technique and efficiency. It is a search for perfection, both physically and mentally, requiring humility and clarity of mind. Contrary to popular belief, physical strength is not essential to be effective in karate. Effectiveness is based on correct techniques, muscular relaxation and developed intuition. There is no fear of losing one's femininity in this practice, which aims for inner harmony and personal fulfillment. Master Ohshima gives us the image of reaching the top of the mountain despite difficulties, men and women taking different paths but rejoicing at the summit to admire the splendor of the landscape.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art focused on submission techniques and takedowns. Women who practice Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu develop incredible physical strength, improve their flexibility and coordination. This discipline promotes problem solving, patience and self-confidence. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu teaches women to use their intelligence and technique rather than brute strength. This sport allows them to beat opponents heavier and more imposing than themselves based solely on their technique! The small size wins over the big one!

Krav Maga

Krav Maga is a method of self-defense combining combat techniques from different martial arts. It is very popular with women because it allows you to learn to defend yourself with simple and effective techniques. Women learn to sharpen their sense of perception, to act quickly by making the right decisions and more broadly to overcome their fear of an attacker.
